Congresswoman Bush Calls for Investigation Following Abrupt, Life-Threatening Closure of Northview Village

Washington D.C. (Jan. 8, 2023) — Today, Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01) sent a letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Beccera urging the Department to launch a formal investigation into the finances, provision of care, and use of Medicaid and Medicare funds of the long-term care facility Northview Village. The letter also asks HHS to investigate allegations that the State of Missouri failed to adequately protect residents in these long-term facilities. This letter comes after the sudden closure of Northview Village, the City of St. Louis’ largest nursing home, on December 15, 2023.

This appalling treatment of residents, resident families, and staff is deeply concerning and warrants further investigation by the Department,” wrote Congresswoman Bush. “Understandably, the sudden closure has upended the lives of residents and staff. I have concerns that there may have been multiple potential violations of the federal laws governing the transfer and discharge of long-term facility residents.

In the letter, Congresswoman Bush explains that the Northview Village facility’s ownership cited payroll issues and abruptly closed the facility with no prior warning. As a result, 170 residents were dangerously displaced and 184 Northview Village workers were left without pay.

No person should ever be put through the unacceptable crisis created by HAS’ sudden closure of Northview Village, and there is significant concern that this situation could be replicated at other facilities in Missouri,” continued the Congresswoman in her letter. “I urge your office to conduct a full investigation into HAS and the State of Missouri to determine whether the handling and closure of Northview potentially violated federal law.

To discuss this urgent matter, Congresswoman Bush will join SEIU Healthcare Missouri at a press conference later today, Monday, January 8th, at 10:00 am CT at Healthcare Accounting on 1401 S. Brentwood Blvd., Brentwood, MO.
